Civility and Leadership Institute
In cooperation with the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia, and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond
Description
This institute is an intensive one-day program designed to introduce sophomore students to leadership and its critical role in fostering a civil society. Students are presented college-level learning material presented by an impressive array of top professors, professionals, and students from the University of Richmond. Participants attend a series of seminars and discussions on such topics as "Understanding Civility in Sports Teams", "The Ethics of Etiquette" and "Global Civic Engagement". They look at leadership and civility in the world around them and explore ways in which they can improve their capacity to be civil and civic leaders to their local, national, and global communities.
Participants
The Collegiate School’s entire sophomore class participated in this institute. With well over 100 participants, this event is the largest of the youth programs offered by the Center for Leadership in Education.
Program
This institute, held on the Collegiate campus, hosts experts from the fields of leadership, political science, civic engagement, social justice, and business. They present important ideas to the students and lead them through activities and discussions to help them gain not only a stronger grasp on civility itself but also to translate that knowledge into action through leadership. Students participate in small and large group sessions to explore civility as a vital component in the practice of effective leadership. This program boasts one of the largest and most diverse group of academic and business professionals to come together to take part in a youth leadership institute.
The institute is designed to provide students with both a theoretical and practical foundation for developing their own leadership skills. This exceptional event helps prepare them for a life of active and civil leadership within their local, national, and global communities.
