What is this course all about?
In summer 2009, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Center for Leadership in Education are teaming up to offer a brand-new summer program: Leadership and the Chesapeake Bay. Students will have the opportunity to study leadership using similar approaches as undergraduates do at the Jepson School. Additionally, they will learn about Chesapeake Bay as an ecosystem by getting up-close-and-personal with the Bay’s many features. Finally, they will use the leadership and environmental knowledge they gain to serve as leaders in their communities and enact real and lasting change on behalf of the Chesapeake Bay.
Who can enroll in this course?
This course is available to all high school juniors, seniors, or rising college freshmen (those entering in Fall 2009) in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
What will I do?
This seven-day course will blend the best of the Jepson School curriculum with the knowledge and experience of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Students will spend time on campus at the University of Richmond and visit a series of field sites throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed to study where and how leadership is – and can be – practiced on behalf of the Bay. A number of experts will speak on various subjects such as: Chesapeake Bay ecology, governmental/regulatory impact on the Bay and leading advocacy/change. Students will study the history of Bay, including how human behavior has impacted the Bay’s evolution. The course will take a holistic approach, requiring students to study the needs of and interactions among many systems, groups, and parties that both affect and rely on the Bay for their livelihood, from animal populations to fishermen and tourist destinations to the water itself. The course will place a great deal of emphasis on activities that help students blend the leadership components with the environmental/ecological aspects of this course. Students will use this unique experience serve as leaders in their own communities and affect positive change in and around the Chesapeake Bay.
Will I earn college credit?
