NGLA Program Summary
According
to a 2002 national survey, 66% of principals said they would
retire in the next six to 10 years. The U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics has calculated that there
will be a 3% rise in job openings for education administrators
between 2000 and 2010. Local school systems in the greater
Richmond, Virginia, area reflect these trends.
Helping fill the gap
The University
of Richmond's Jepson
School of Leadership Studies and the School
of Continuing Studies began a study to determine if
a programmatic response was necessary. After conducting
preliminary research, faculty developed a high-quality professional
development program based on best operational and theoretical
practices.
This program includes targeted training
activities in which scholars in the leadership studies field
and practitioners from local school systems offer their
expertise to rising administrative candidates.
A unique partnership
The Center for Leadership in Education is a
collaboration between the University of
Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership
Studies and the School of Continuing
Studies. The Center for Leadership in
Education infuses leadership studies across
the K-12 curriculum.
We partner with a variety of public school
systems, private schools and other K-12
educational organizations to develop
customized leadership training programs.
Local school division leadership recognized
that the responsibility for student learning, supported
by the Virginia Standards of Learning and the federal No
Child Left Behind regulations, increased the accountability
of school leaders for how well teachers teach and how much
students learn.
Through the NGLA program, identified candidates
complete the preparation to become leaders who are ready
for the increased responsibility and accountability of leading
public schools.
